In his practice, Rutger de Vries explores the relationship between man and machine and its evolution from industrialization to the Anthropocene epoch. De Vries investigates this field of tension by outsourcing the gesture of painting to self-developed “painting machines.” These “painting machines” often consist of mechanical elements or software-driven machines and resemble room-filling apparatuses. Albeit the character and output of de Vries’ installations seem are experimental in their experience, the artists creative process stems from a systemic logic rooted in the traditions of process painting and conceptual art. Merging industrial mechanics and computer-controlled machines with techniques such as aerosol spray paint, paint bombs, and corrosive etching chemicals, Rutger de Vries creates drawings, paintings and (three-dimensional) murals.
